Greensboro Roller Derby runs two new skater academys a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. This is a 12 week long course where you and a group of other new skaters will work from the ground up to build the skills necessary for flat track roller derby! Whether it’s been a couple years since your skating days, or you’ve never even tried on a pair of skates, this course is for everyone.

GSORD hosts academy twice a year. The next session will be Spring 2025.

Roller Derby is an intense, contact heavy sport. While academy skaters will be practicing minimal contact with each other, you’ll still need protection against the floor. Therefore, we require a skating helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. A mouthguard is strongly encouraged. For skates, we require quad style (not inline) skates for practice, and recommend a flat, roller derby style boot. If you’re interested in purchasing gear, we recommend Derby City Skates. If you’re not sure yet about investing, we have loaner equipment available, just let us know what you need!

Skaters must be at least 18 years old. Skaters will be required to pay monthly dues and purchase supplemental insurance from the WFTDA.

Monthly dues during Academy training - $25/ month

Monthly dues for league members - $40/month

*Financial assistance is available for league dues if needed.
